As we go over the history and timeline of the cosmetics industry. We have a clear understanding of when makeup and cosmetics use rose in popularity, but what we haven't discussed is why? Why exactly did we start using make-up?

In this post, let's discuss the article "Why Did We Start Wearing Makeup?" written by Meg Matthias for Encyclopedia Britannica.

In this article Meg Mattias explores the origins of makeup, tracing it back to ancient Egypt around 6,000 years ago. It is explained that makeup in ancient Egypt was used as a marker of wealth and to appeal to the gods, and that both men and women wore elaborate eyeliner as early as 4000 BCE. However, the use of makeup disappeared in Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire...and then reappeared during the Middle Ages when Crusaders brought cosmetics and perfumes back from the Middle East. It was concluded that makeup has had rises and fall in popularity in every era, since it first began being used. Thus, makeup has since evolved, serving various purposes in different cultures and eras, from religious plays in medieval Europe to modern-day beauty standards. However in Meg Mattias's conclusion of her article, she states the opinion,

"Cosmetics, now “productized” and advertised, again became a mark of wealth and status, and emphasizing physical features, even for sex appeal, was no longer considered quite so selfish or wicked. Eventually, advertisers persuaded women to take the opposite view: cosmetics were a necessity."

I agree with Meg on this opinion. Although I have always loved the artistry, creativity and freedom of expression that makeup allows us, and though I can say the same for what I'm learning to do in Marketing...it is important to acknowledge the potential negative impact both can have. It is important to acknowledge that the pressure that in order "to look perfect, professional or pretty--a woman must wear cosmetics" is a harmful message to be spreading.
