It wouldn't be a cosmetics history blog without mentioning Vaseline. Realistically speaking, without this brand and its innovative product, so many of the brands and products that we have discussed thus far, would not exist today. Now, lets give flowers for one of the OG cosmetic brands and one that is still a staple in everyone's repertoire after 150 years, and let us discuss the brand Vaseline.

A Brief History
Vaseline, a household name today, has a fascinating history that dates back to 1859. It all began when Robert Augustus Chesebrough, a young chemist, discovered a natural, waxy substance with remarkable skin-healing properties while working in the oil fields of Titusville, Pennsylvania. This substance, known as rod wax, was used by oil workers to heal cuts and burns. Chesebrough brought samples back to his lab in Brooklyn, where he refined the substance and patented his purification method in 1865. In 1870, he introduced the world to Vaseline Petroleum Jelly, one of the first branded products in North America.
The First Product
The first product Chesebrough introduced was Vaseline Petroleum Jelly, a versatile ointment designed to heal and protect the skin. Its unique triple purification process ensured that it was free from impurities, making it safe and effective for various uses.

The First Advertising Campaign
Chesebrough's innovative marketing strategies played a crucial role in Vaseline's success. He demonstrated the product's effectiveness by showing how it healed his own burns and cuts, often in front of an audience. He also gave out free samples, a novel approach at the time, to build trust and encourage word-of-mouth promotion. By 1874, Vaseline was selling over 1,400 tins a day across the United States.
Iconic Products
Over the years, Vaseline has expanded its product line to include a variety of skin care essentials. Some of its most iconic products include:
Vaseline Intensive Care Lotion: Known for its hydrating properties, this lotion helps to keep skin soft and smooth.
Vaseline Lip Therapy: These small tins of lip balm are a favorite for keeping lips moisturized and protected.
Vaseline Healing Jelly: The original product that started it all, still widely used for its healing and protective benefits.
Iconic Marketing Campaigns
Vaseline has also been known for its memorable marketing campaigns:
"Handiest Thing in the House": This campaign highlighted Vaseline's versatility, promoting it as a must-have item for first aid and cosmetic use.
"The Healing Power of Vaseline": This tagline emphasizes the brand's commitment to skin health and has been a cornerstone of its marketing efforts
