With any brand, there are products that remain timeless. Whether they garner cult followings, maintain a niche in a market, or remain industry innovators, certain products can withstand the tests of time.
Marketers and consumers alike may consider those products anomalies, but its important to understand what sets those products apart.
What is it about these particular products that make customers keep coming back for more?
This week, in combination with our deep dive on the brand Coty, let's observe one of their most iconic products, the "Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder" and what set it apart.
Personally, my first encounter with this product was at only age 11! During the Movie Make-Up and Special FX summer camp I took, we used the face powder to set our Special FX Make-up looks. After the class where we learned to create fake scars and bruises, I begged my mom to buy me the Airspun Loose Face Powder, however she bought me the teacher's recommended alternative: baby powder. Even at age 11, I could tell the difference between using a quality make-up product during summer camp, and the alternative recreating the looks I learned at home.
Fast forward to 2009, and I am enamored by the first generation of YouTube's pioneer make-up influencers. When I should be doing homework, I was watching face painting tutorial on YouTube. At14, I was still fascinated by SpecialFX make-up and now drag make-up artists, and I realize, everyone is still recommending this Coty AirSpun Loose Setting Powder. It wasn't just a fixation I had imagined as a very young artist.
What really sets it apart? Coty wasn't the first brand to make a face powder, so what did they do different? Coty developed a way to make the finest milled face powder on the market,
"The machines that Coty secured produced a better face powder because it produced smaller powder particles that were more evenly sized and better mixed."
according to https://cosmeticsandskin.com/aba/coty-air-spun.php they also marketed this new technology in layman's terms that didn't overwhelm consumers with too much technical jargon. The marketing focused on its powder being lightweight and more friendly to the skin than other existing powder products,
"Coty advertisements of the period target some common consumers worries: smoothness, covering power, colour and cling."
By adopting new technology, and Marketing the powder differently, Coty was able to set its Airspun Powder apart from its competitors. And, its uber finely milling process has withstood generations of consumer demands for finely milled facial setting products. To the point that in the year 2024, nearly a hundred years after it was created, consumers still gravitate toward the Coty AirSpun Loose setting face powder as a "Holy Grail" product.
