Let's dive into the fascinating world of Max Factor, a brand that has been a game-changer in the beauty industry for over a century. Max Factor has been a pioneer in the makeup world, making glamour accessible to everyone. Whether you're a makeup newbie or a seasoned pro, there's something for everyone in Max Factor's iconic and innovative products.

Origins and History: Max Factor, born Maksymilian Faktorowicz in 1872 in Lodz, Russia which is now Poland, was a visionary makeup artist, wig maker, and inventor. He emigrated to America in 1914, settling in Los Angeles to be closer to the budding film industry. His reputation for expertise spread quickly, and he began working with Hollywood's leading film stars, then creating his own cosmetic products for a glamorous yet realistic look on screen.

First Product: In 1914, Max created his own version of greasepaint, naming it Flexible Greasepaint, a variation of the previously used heavy stage makeup which he notably thought was "terrifying." His new formulation was thinner and more natural looking, it came in 12 different shades. Next, in 1916, Max Factor introduced eye shadows and eyebrow pencils to the consumer, making these products available outside the movie industry for the first time. Four years later, in 1920, he launched a full range of cosmetics under the brand name "Society Make-Up," thereby coining the term "make-up" and revolutionizing the beauty world.

First Advertising Campaign: Max Factor's first major advertising campaign was for Pan-Cake Make-up, introduced in 1935. This makeup was developed to meet the unique requirements of Technicolor film, and its success led to its introduction to the general retail market. The campaign was backed by a color-based national advertising campaign, making it a huge hit.

Iconic Products: Max Factor has introduced several iconic products over the years. Some of the most notable ones include:

  • Flexible Greasepaint: The first makeup seen on screen.

  • Lip Pomade: Later called lip gloss, it provided a glamorous, glossy appearance to movie actresses' lips.

  • Pan-Cake Make-up: The first commercially available foundation.

  • Tru-Color Lipstick: Known for its long-lasting color.

  • False Lash Effect Mascara: Taking lash volume to another level.

Successful Campaigns: Max Factor has had numerous successful campaigns, but one of the most memorable was the 1999 campaign featuring Madonna. This campaign showcased Madonna's iconic looks and solidified Max Factor's place in the beauty industry.

From a Make-Up trailblazer, to creator of the first Make-Up line, we can all tip our hats to the icon that is Max Factor!
